“Mainz” is a German club that played at a lower level for many years, but in the 21st century, it reached the Bundesliga, in which it settled for a long time. The team was founded in 1905. Over time, the club rose higher and higher, but they did not play the first season at the Bundesliga level until the 21st century.
“Mainz” is not and has never been a club like “Bayern” Munich or “Borussia” Dortmund. The financial capabilities of Mainz are much smaller, which is widely known. Usually, when people talk about the success of clubs, trophies are often mentioned. In the case of Mainz, the most important awards in German soccer are still not in the showcase of the club. It is a lower-ranked club for whom participating in the Bundesliga is already a success.
A breakthrough for Mainz was the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as a coach. For the first time in history, Klopp led the team to level 1 of the Bundesliga. It was in 2004. After that, Mainz played three consecutive Bundesliga seasons. The team ranked 11th twice and 16th once. It cost them relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2007.
